New unisex Calatrava is taking off
PATEK is putting a smile on men and women’s face with a new unisex pilot’s watch.
When it first came on sale five years ago, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time reference 5524G was in demand: super sporty yet luxurious with a large case, matte blue dial and luminous hands…
Now say hello to the ultimate travel companion.
The Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, reference 7234G-001, deemed ‘medium size’ joins the pilot collection but is the first to offer white-gold in a smaller case to suit both ladies and gents.
And you’re probably thinking, errr this watch isn’t new.
Well, a version was launched at the Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition in Singapore but that was a limited edition steel model with a light blue dial and synthetic strap. The rose gold model had launched earlier in 2018’s Baselworld.
White gold
However, what we have here is an 18kt white gold version in a smaller case at just 37.5mm instead of 42mm. This is complemented by a navy strap with a prong buckle and a bonus tan leather strap.
And this time the beautiful Arabic numerals are back but in white gold on a striking blue-lacquered dial. The round Calatrava case has a flat, slightly beveled bezel and caseband that merges seamlessly with the strap lugs.
Classic calibre 324
This new version includes a complex model – the Alarm Travel Time 5520P. The time and date indicators remain, as does the second time zone and the automatic calibre 324 SC FUS.
The same movement is used in many of Patek’s watches including the Nautilus and Aquanaut but this watch boasts a 21k gold central motor and features more nifty technology from Patek including the Gyromax balance and Spiromax balance spring. And this can all be admired through the sapphire caseback.
Home and away
We love the simple but effective dual time-zone feature, with two hour hands representing home and local time at 9 and 3 o’clock, so travelling couldn’t be simpler, No more having to second guess what time it is back in the UK.
The local hand is filled with luminous material so that it is visible in all light conditions – handy or what? This hand can be set in one-hour increments easily by using the twin pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock.
And, we really like the fact that if you aren’t travelling, both hands stay snug together!
This watch is water resistant to 60 metres and is now on the market for around £37,500.
