A beginner’s guide to Rolex watches

Everyone knows the brand and its logo. But what exactly makes a Rolex watch so alluring?

Well, it’s a combination of meticulous craftsmanship, savvy marketing and heritage dating back to 1905.

The Swiss brand is well known as one of the world’s best watchmakers, inventing both the water resistant case, as well as the self winding movement and rainbow bezel.

And because they are made to such exacting standards, you can be sure that accuracy is going to be spot on.

When does Rolex release its new watches?

Usually, Rolex releases any new watches at the Watches & Wonders event in Geneva.

The slightest changes to models such as updates, minor tweaks or dial variations cause major interest in the horology world.

But generally speaking, you can expect to see a major model update every five – ten years, with new models appearing each decade or to celebrate a major anniversary.

Which are the most popular Rolex watches?

Rolex has several iconic models that remain highly sought-after.

Some of the most popular Rolex watches of the sports models include the Rolex Submariner (a dive watch), the Rolex Daytona (a racing chronograph), Rolex GMT Master II (a dual-time function watch) and the Rolex Explorer (for adventurers).

There are also classic models which are extremely sought after, including the Rolex Datejust (a timeless watch), Rolex Day-Date (President) (a symbol of success) and a Rolex Sky Dweller (a high-end travel watch).

Where is the best place to buy a Rolex?

So even if you are carrying a suitcase full of cash, you can’t just meander into a Rolex store and start buying.

You have to wait a very long time to get the model of your dreams from an authorised dealer – and of course, this depends on the one you’re after.

Many of the Rolex watches are limited editions so they are already hard to come by.

However, if you visit Luxe Watches we sell both new and pre-loved watches, so you may wish to check out our Epping boutique.

A little about our favourite models

Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is considered one of the greatest dive watches of all time for its iconic design and timeless style.

The Submariner’s design has remained largely unchanged since its 1953 debut, making it an instantly recognisable classic as it transitions seamlessly from casual wear to formal occasions.

Featuring a ceramic bezel that won’t scratch or fade over time, and created from 904L Oystersteel (a high grade stainless steel), you can also expect a 300m water resistance.

Rolex Daytona

The Rolex Daytona is a legendary chronograph known for its precision, durability, and racing heritage.

It features a stopwatch function with three sub-dials and a tachymeter bezel for measuring speed.

Powered by Rolex’s Caliber 4131 movement, it offers a 72-hour power reserve, shock resistance, and Superlative Chronometer certification for ±2 seconds per day accuracy. Its 40mm Oyster case is waterproof up to 100 meters, making it both stylish and robust.

Rolex GMT Master II

The Rolex GMT-Master II is a luxury travel watch known for its dual time zone function, featuring a 24-hour rotating bezel and an independent GMT hand for tracking multiple time zones.

Built from 904L Oystersteel or Everose gold, it boasts a scratch-resistant Cerachrom bezel that maintains its look over time. Powered by Rolex’s Caliber 3285 movement, it offers a 70-hour power reserve and shock resistance with its Parachrom hairspring.

With 100m water resistance and a choice of Oyster or Jubilee bracelets, it is both durable and stylish. Iconic models like the Pepsi, Batman, and Root Beer are highly sought after, making the GMT-Master II a prestigious timepiece and a strong investment.

Are Rolex watches a good investment?

Not all Rolex watches appreciate—common models like the Datejust hold value but don’t always spike in price. Market fluctuations will also affect resale prices. It is always worth considering the condition and original packaging (box/papers) significantly impact resale value.

If you’re looking for a good investment piece, focus on the sports models we mentioned earlier.
