A guide to buying and selling Cartier watches
Here at Luxe Watches our team is always on the lookout for stunning watches to buy but we particularly love Cartier pieces.
Synonymous with luxury and royalty since 1847, Cartier popularised watches globally by creating its Santos model after a Brazilian pilot struggled to use his pocket watch while he was flying around the Eiffel Tower in 1901. He wanted something that could be worn on the wrist.
Ever since, the French brand, dubbed ‘the jeweller to kings and the king of jewellers’ has created elegant watches that are bold, personal and precise. Today Cartier watches maintain a very high resale value and are popular with celebrities including Robert Downey Junior, Mick Jagger, Idris Elba and Ben Affleck.
If you’re looking to buy or sell a Cartier watch, here’s a guide to help you.
Are Cartier watches a good investment?
Cartier is one of the major players in the horology world. The long-established brand always pours investment into the beauty, functionality and technological advancements of its watches.
Many Cartier watches retain their value and several will go on to be worth more on the pre-owned market than when they were first purchased. If they are kept with their original box and documentation, this also helps with the resale value.
Which Cartier watches are most popular?
Cartier’s diverse range of timepieces appeals to avid collectors, pilots, pilots and lots more.
Its watches are well known for being extravagant, unusual and robust, with collectors around the world keen to invest in the reputation. They know that only premium materials are used and a lot of cash is invested to advance the technology, hence the prices of the timepieces.
Tank Louis Cartier
The Tank has developed a cult-like status, and is highly desirable, especially on the pre-worn market. It has seen many variations over the years including the elongated rectangular Tank Americaine and the more classic Tank Louis Cartier series with some small complications built in. Fans are particularly drawn to the classic Tank Louis Cartier in rose gold or steel.
But there is such a vast selection of styles under the Tank family varying in complications, straps and metals, making for infinite versions and yet each model is so elegant and has the crisp look Cartier is known for.
Calibre de Cartier
Those who love sport – especially water sports – tend to like the Calibre de Cartier line due to the large number of models including chronographs and diving watches. This series was unveiled by Cartier in 2010, and encapsulates all of the elegance and refinement that the luxury jeweller has championed since it was founded.
Santos De Cartier
The Santos de Cartier collection of square watches took inspiration from the first wristwatch created by the brand. In 1904, Louis-Francois Cartier – who was friends with the earlier mentioned pilot) created a wristwatch dubbed the Santos. The pilot used his Cartier Santos on his record breaking worldwide first public engine-powered flight, which helped solidify the brand’s reputation.
Today, the redesigned Santos watches, with visible screws on the bezel, have become a signature statement, with the large Santos de Cartier stainless steel bracelet version with automatic movement and white dial, one of the most popular models from the brand.
Considering buying a Cartier watch?
If you’re thinking about investing in a Cartier watch, it’s always advisable to choose a design that suits you as you may be holding onto it while you wait for a surge in the market.
It’s impossible to predict exactly which luxury watches will be high in demand but it all depends on consumers ~ how quickly tastes change in comparison to whether a watch is rare or widely available, as well as its functionality.
