LIVing life to the max: The watches of golf pros
The last few years have seen the world of golf turned on its head with the launch of the rival LIV tour.
The Saudi Arabia-backed venture has caused consternation amongst traditionalists by luring some of the sport’s biggest stars into playing in its brand new event.
Some superstars, like Rory McIllroy, have stayed true to the PGA but others such as world number one Dustin Johnson and European Ryder Cup star Jon Rahm have made the switch and enjoyed the vast wealth on offer for LIV players.
Here are some of the timepieces worn by the world’s best:
Jon Rahm – Rolex Sky Dweller
Rahm has been a professional for less than a decade, but is certainly an undisputed star of his sport.
His favoured watch seems to be his good luck charm, as he wore his dependable Rolex Sky-Dweller while adding the Ryder Cup to his list of victories, including the US Open and the Masters.
This beautiful and complicated model showcases dual time zones – handy for him to track both US and Spanish time. These are represented by a rotating disc and accompanied by an annual calendar that distinguishes between 30- and 31-day months automatically, so the date adjustment is only necessary in March. Each function can be changed through turning the bezel.
Sergio Garcia – Omega Seamaster
The Spaniard has represented Omega as an ambassador since 2003 but one watch we have spoiled him wearing is an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Deep Black. When he secured his first Masters victory he wore it when he accepted his green jacket – and the cool $1.9 million prize.
The Deep Black Collection, launched in June 2016, introduced Omega’s first four all-ceramic GMT diver watches. Each watch is crafted from a solid block of ceramic, which might explain why Garcia didn’t wear his during the tournament.
The bezel features a ceramic and rubber blend with the first 15 minutes marked in colored Liquidmetal and powered by calibre 8906.
Brooks Koepka – Rolex Daytona
Brooks Koepka claimed victory at the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club marking a significant shift in the golf world. He sported a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ‘Panda’ with a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel during the tournament.
Released in 2016, the Daytona 116500LN is one of Rolex’s most sought-after watches and is virtually impossible to purchase at retail. The 40mm offering in stainless steel has a 12-hour chronograph and luminous hour markers.
Dustin Johnson – Hublot Spirit of Big Bang King Gold
Having been a Hublot ambassador for several years, his preferred watch is usually the rare Big Bang Beverly Hills model. But at the 2021 Masters, he placed the green jacket on champion Hideki Matsuyama while sporting another rare Hublot timepiece, the Spirit of Big Bang King Gold Jewellery.
First introduced a decade ago, the Spirit of Big Bang was the start of the tonneau watches. The Spirit line is 45mm with large cases made from 18 carat King Gold – a gold alloy developed by Hublot for their watches that contains more platinum, giving a warm colour – and boasting 168 diamonds. Sapphire crystal offers a view of the internal movement.
