Wimbledon stars’ love match with luxury timepieces

It’s that time of year again: Strawberries and cream, celebrity spotting and random grunts and groans are all part of the world’s favourite tennis tournament.

Monday (July 1) sees the first day of Wimbledon commence and spectators, who have tried in vain to clinch tickets to watch their heroes grace Centre Court, are more than ready for the competition.

But it’s not all about amazing aces and vicious volleys as the sports event has seen its fair share of fashion faux pas – as well as some true suave and sophistication.

Here we take a look what the stars love to wear on their wrists.

Rafa Nadal

The Spaniard, who ranks No.2 in the world, loves a manual winding Richard Mille 27-03 and was spotted wearing it as he collected the French Open trophy. The striking red and yellow timepiece pays homage to Rafa’s homeland while the upper bridge depicts a bull – the symbol of Spain.

A great choice for the sportsman, the main innovation of this watch is the ability of the tourbillion calibre to withstand shock of up to 10,000g’s. And there’s a power reserve of 70 hours means it’s reliable for those endless set battles.

But fans of the star and his wrist wear will struggle to get their hands on one of these as there were only 50 ever made available.

Djokovic’s partnership with Seiko has been running since 2014 when the talented tennis ace switched from Audemars  Piguet to the Japanese giant. Since then he managed to cling onto the top world ranking for 28 consecutive months and claimed nine Grand Slams.

Seiko helps assist the Novak Djokovic Foundation and released a collection of watches with young people in mind, carrying the foundation name and message. Novak is often seen on and off the court wearing a few varieties of Seiko, including his Premier Kinetic Perpetual and Sportura chronographs.

He tends not to wear it on court but is likely to be spotted wearing the newest version – the Novak Djokovic Premier Astron Limited Edition 2018 watch.

Serena Williams

The mighty American powerhouse tends to admire Audemar Piguet watches. The star, who has been the brand ambassador since 2014, has worn many variations of the classic Royal Oak Offshore including rose gold and stainless steel versions both on and off court.

The 37-year-old mum caught the attention of style gurus everywhere when, along with her husband, Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, wore his and hers watches at the 2019 Met Gala – hers a diamond-encrusted Royal Oak while he opted for the CODE 11:59 Automatic Chronograph.
