History of the Royal Oak

To get through a turbulent time for the watch industry back in 1972, the original Royal Oak watch was created. At this time the market was flooded with cheap Quartz matches made in Asia.

Audemars Piguet had to think fast to create a solid stainless steel sports watch which looked luxurious. The company asked luxury watch designer and artist, Gerald Genta to create it.

He went on to create some of the most well-known watches in history, including Patek Philippe‘s Nautilus in 1976.

He was inspired by a deep-sea-diving helmet, which made for a creative design back in the 70s. The result was an octagonal bezel, visible screws and an integrated bracelet.

Around 1000 of the watches were sold within three years, helping to establish the popularity of a steel sports luxury watch.

The first model released was reference 5402, known today as the Royal Oak A series. It had a slim automatic calibre 2121 movement that’s still made today.

Audemars Piguet still produces Royal Oaks today, in a range of sizes for men and women. These come in titanium, rose gold, yellow gold and platinum with different colours of dial.
