Time and tide wait for no man: Don’t miss this Patek favourite

At Luxe Watches, Patek’s Nautilus collection is our favourite and we’re thrilled to have a Chronograph 5980R-001 in our showroom. With its classic octagonal bezel shape and striking porthole case construction, it’s taken prime position as a firm favourite in many watch collections around the world.

This handsome men’s 18ct rose gold sports watch was introduced in 2010 and is a beautifully balanced design. At 40.5mm across the case with slightly more added for the winglets, it’s slim enough (12mm with a generous case flank) to be worn under a fitted shirt sleeve.

Bold and beautiful

The dynamic dial is a rare mixture of grey and chocolate in colour, with a darker gradient at the edges and a lighter centre that also looks metallic – great for those who want to feel like they have several watches. The great contrast between the dial base and the baton-style hands, along with hand-painted indices make this an incredibly legible watch.

Red, silver and black print help brighten the watch’s personality, giving it a more summery feel.  The mono counter balances the dial well, with hours contained on the inside of the register while minutes are on the outside. The date sits at the 3 o’clock position, while at 6 o’clock, the silver-accented chronograph 30-minute and 12-hour recorders are located.

In-house movement

Powered by in-house calibre CH-28-520 which can be seen through the sapphire crystal caseback. The 327-part movement boasts a gold winding rotor, 35 jewels and Gyromax balance. The 5980R-001 has automatic self-winding with a unidirectional system which is highly efficient, while offering an impressive 45-50 hour power reserve. And because this model is a flyback chronograph, it’s simply a case of pressing reset and hey presto, it restarts itself. Pushers are neatly integrated into the flank of the case to preserve the Nautilus profile.

Subtle strap

The strap is styled to look like leather as it’s matte dark brown, but it’s actually flexible rubber. It features a contrasting stitch which looks stunning next to the case. Even the underside of the strap looks like the calfskin you’d expect to see on the underside of any leather Patek strap but also has the durability that leather never will – plus, it’s also 120m water resistant like the 5711. This watch comes with an interchangeable strap option in brown alligator with monochrome stitching. A twin trigger release system closes the rose gold double-fold clasp with a positive snap, making it incredibly secure. This is engraved with ‘Nautilus’ which is bespoke to the model
