Why monochrome is on trend for women’s watches in 2020

The last decade has seen a plethora of women’s luxury watches emblazoned with a rainbow’s-worth of every semi-precious stone, highlighted by some very vivid dials.

But no matter how bright things appear on the surface there’s now a demand, as seen to grace recent runways, to strip things back to their classic and basic best – black and white.

Black and white watches ooze vintage appeal and have such understated elegance.

Here we check out some of the latest two-tone offerings from our favourite luxury watch brands.

Hublot Big Bang One Click Marc Ferrero

Hublot’s second collaboration with Marc Ferrero has seen a focus on a lady wearing dark glasses but sporting Ferrero’s trademark red lipstick.

The brands teamed up to create a watch in black and white versions to represent day and night and how they both need one another.

A lacquered dial  next to the red lips highlights a clever combination of faces and figures.

Both self-winding watches are 39mm in diameter and limited to 100 pieces.

The white one boasts a polished-steel and resin case, while the black is ceramic and both have straps available in leather or rubber.

Hermès Arceau Cheval Cosmique

The dial on this limited watch certainly represents these unprecedented times we live in. One version displays a horse – a universal symbol of freedom – and features a dark alligator strap.

The second, featuring white gold and 82 diamonds has a luminous dial, finished with a Chantilly alligator strap.

They are powered with a mechanical self-winding movement which is created in

Hermès Horloger workshops, like the bracelet and dial.

Chopard Happy Sport Joaillerie

Dancing diamonds and clever craftsmanship make this watch a lovely edition to the Chopard family and a sure favourite for the popular two-tone theme.

Powered by the Chopard 96.17-C automatic movement, this white offering has a power reserve of 65 hours.

With no less than 167 components, the 29-jewel movement’s bridges are decorated with a Côtes de Genève motif, which you can see through the caseback.

It’s water resistant to 30m and features a 36mm case.

Chanel BOY.FRIEND Skeleton Watch

While the classic Chanel look is very feminine, the brand also produces more minimalist and androgynous designs.

With pure lines, balanced proportions and perfect shapes, this watch is simple – just like its colour scheme.

With an 18K white gold bezel set with 38 baguette-cut diamonds, the watch boasts a shiny black alligator pattern calfskin strap.

As Gabrielle Chanel, who built the fashion empire on the opposite shades, once said: “Black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.’
